Getting Online Without the Overwhelm: The Essentials (Part 1)
Part 1 of 2. This post covers the essentials. Already sorted the basics? Jump to Part 2: Want to Know More for websites, WhatsApp, AI, bespoke apps and more.

Hi, I'm Chris, founder of Connection Worx. I've spent over 18 years working in telecoms and communications, and in recent years I've also become heavily involved in coaching and facilitation.

One thing I've noticed is how many people feel overwhelmed by the technology involved in getting a business off the ground. There's so much information out there that it's often difficult to know where to start.

That's why I've put together this blog. It covers some of the basics you'll need to get yourself up and running, and the good news is that many of these things are perfectly manageable on your own.

But you don't have to do everything yourself. Whether you just need someone to point you in the right direction, work alongside you, or take care of the technical side for you, that's where Connection Worx can help.

The important thing is that you don't need to have everything figured out before you start putting yourself and your business out there. Sometimes you just need a little guidance to get things moving.

Being seen and being visible is an important part of growing your business. Having somewhere professional and welcoming to direct people gives them the chance to discover who you are, get to know you, and feel confident about taking that next step. It can make all the difference between someone feeling ready to work with you and someone saying, "That sounds interesting, I'll get back to you," only to disappear and find somebody else.

Sometimes, simply having that first credible, professional presence, even if simple, gives you the confidence to start having conversations, offering your services and discovering what your business can become along the way.

Branding Doesn't Have to Be Overwhelming

If you've ever spoken to a web developer, you may have been asked about brand guidelines, brand colours, Pantone references or hex codes. Most people have no idea what any of that means, and that's absolutely fine. You don't need to.

We can work all of that out together through a simple, natural conversation, in plain English, as and when the need arises. You don't need to understand technical terminology or have everything planned out beforehand.

From there, we can provide as much or as little help as you need, with plenty of optional add-ons along the way. We simply charge for the time involved in getting things set up, and we'll always explain any additional costs clearly. We also work with various third-party services, which can either be billed directly to you or managed on your behalf in a simple monthly bill.

The key thing is that everything is flexible. There's no one-size-fits-all approach, no unnecessary complexity, and no expectation that you already know how everything works. We'll figure it out together.

    Start Right at Point Zero

Not sure where to begin? Book a free 15-minute call with Chris and have an initial conversation about what you might need. It won't cost you anything, and we can help you understand what you do and don't need.

If there's something we can help with, we can take it from there. Below are a few of the things we regularly help people with when they're just starting out or want to create a more professional appearance online.

Three ways to work with Connection Worx: signpost you, do it with you, or do it for you

Three Ways to Work With Us

A lot of this you genuinely can do yourself. But plenty of people would simply rather outsource it, and that's completely fine. However much or little help you want, we work in a few different ways:

    • Do it yourself. We'll write you the guides and prep so you can crack on in your own time. You just pay us for a little bit of time to put it together for you.
    • Do it with you. We'll hold your hand and guide you through it step by step, so you learn as you go but never feel stuck.
    • Done for you. Prefer to hand it over completely? We'll take it off your plate and do it on your behalf.

Mix and match as you like. Some things you'll happily do yourself, others you'll want us to handle entirely. Just tell us what suits you.

Your own domain name is the foundation of everything online

    1. Your Own Domain Name

This is the foundation everything else sits on. Your domain is your address online, something like www.yourbusinessname.com, and it does double duty. It's the home of your website or landing page, and it's also the basis of your professional email, so you can have hello@yourbusinessname.com instead of a free gmail address.

Getting the right domain, in your name, sets you up properly from the start. For domains and other applications like this, we can either manage them in-house and take care of the billing for you, or signpost you so you can purchase and manage them yourself. I can help you choose and register one, or point you in the right direction if you'd rather do it yourself.

    2. A Professional Email Address

First impressions count, and an email that ends in your own domain.com instantly looks more credible than a free gmail or hotmail address. But it isn't just about looking good. A proper business email is more secure, gives you better control over your data, and matters when it comes to cybersecurity and privacy.

Once your domain is sorted, a professional email built on it, something like hello@yourname.com, starts from around £5.90 a month. That comes with access to Google Workspace too, so email, calendar, docs and storage are all there.

Again, we can either set this up and manage it in-house (including the billing), or simply show you how so you keep full control yourself.

A link-in-bio page brings all your links together in one place

    3. A Link-in-Bio Page

Ever sent someone to find you online and realised your links are scattered everywhere? A Link-in-Bio page fixes that. One easy, professional place where people can find everything: your phone number, your WhatsApp, your social accounts, a short bio on how you help, and a link to any freebies, quizzes or giveaways you're offering.

Perfect for popping in your Instagram or social media bio so everything you do is just one tap away. You can build one yourself, or we can create it for you from £75.

A focused landing page built to convert visitors into action

    4. A Landing Page

Where a Link-in-Bio points people in lots of directions, a landing page does one job really well: guiding someone towards a single action. Signing up to your freebie, booking a call, buying your offer. It's focused, professional, and built to convert.

Plenty of people want both: a Link-in-Bio for their socials and a landing page for a specific offer. You can have one, the other, or both. We can build these for you from £75.

A booking or availability system lets people book straight into your calendar

    5. A Booking or Availability System

If people have to email back and forth to pin down a time with you, you'll lose some of them along the way. A proper booking system lets people see your availability and book straight into your calendar, no to-and-fro needed.

There are plenty of good options out there, including Calendly and Cal.com, or bespoke ones built into platforms like GoHighLevel or Wix. We work across lots of different tools, so we can either help you make the most of what you've already got, or build you something from scratch.

    Want to Go Further?

Steps 1 to 5 above are the basics we can put in place very cost-effectively, helping you get started and create a genuinely professional appearance for yourself and your clients without having to go down the full route. They're the quick wins that make an immediate difference.

But if you're ready to go further, we can also help with websites, WhatsApp, AI, bespoke applications and more. See Part 2: Getting Online Without the Overwhelm: Want to Know More.
