Think Your Broadband's Rubbish? It Might Not Be the Broadband

Think Your Broadband's Rubbish? It Might Not Be the Broadband

Have you ever stood in your venue thinking, "this broadband is useless"? Before you rip it out and order a new line, it's worth knowing that the connection itself often isn't the problem. The way it's being used is.

I had exactly this with a customer recently. A bar, where some people could get online and others couldn't, and the finger was pointed straight at the BT router. We tried a power cycle, no joy, then a factory reset, which sorted it. But the interesting bit is why.

In a busy bar, people come and go all day, and it's rarely the same faces. Every phone that connects to the WiFi is handed an address by the router, and the router holds that address for the length of what's called the lease time. When someone leaves, their address stays reserved until that lease runs out. In a venue with constant churn, those reservations pile up for people who are long gone, and eventually the router runs out of addresses to give. That's when new arrivals can't connect, even though your broadband is working perfectly.

This particular router had been in for four or five years. Think about the sheer number of devices that have passed through in that time. No wonder it needed a clear-out. A factory reset fixes it on the day, but the longer-term answer is simply tuning the settings to match the venue, giving the router a sensible address pool and a lease time that suits a real visit, so it keeps itself tidy.

It's Not Just About Who's Connected

There's another layer worth knowing about. If your guest WiFi and your business run over the same connection, every phone in every pocket is quietly connecting the moment someone walks in, even when nobody's actively using it. Backups to iCloud, app updates, all of it, sipping away at your bandwidth. And that same pipe might be carrying your EPOS tills, your CCTV, your streaming audio from Spotify, even your phones if you're on VoIP. Guests connecting without a second thought can genuinely degrade the experience you're paying for.

A simple captive portal, the click-to-connect splash page you can set up with something like Ubiquiti or Purple WiFi, means only people who actually want to get online take up space and bandwidth. Better still, separating your business traffic from your guest traffic altogether, so your tills and your music always get priority, makes a real difference.

And don't underestimate the knock-on effect. Walk into a venue where the WiFi's down and the background music has stopped, and the whole ambience falls flat. That's the kind of thing that quietly stops people coming back.

It's Worth Looking at the Connection Itself

It's also worth looking at the connection itself. If you've been on the same line for a while, you may well be able to get more bandwidth these days than when you first signed up. Many venues are still on ADSL or fibre to the cabinet, and with the old copper network now being retired, it's always worth a conversation to see whether we can move you onto a full fibre to the premises connection. More bandwidth often helps, but it isn't the answer to everything on its own. It's the combination of more bandwidth and better bandwidth management that really makes the difference.

If your venue is one of the many still relying on legacy copper lines, our hospitality guide to the PSTN switch-off is a good place to start. And if you're already thinking about a wider review of your setup, our free Connectivity Review maps what you've got and where the gaps are.

I've been in the BT channel for over 18 years, and we see this time and time again. Nine times out of ten, a new router isn't the answer. Staying on top of your WiFi, keeping your data hygiene in check, or separating your connections out can make a massive difference, for a fraction of the cost.

If any of this rings true, or you'd like to have a proper conversation about your setup, reach out via the contact page and we'll take it from there.
